Thanks very much for looking at our listing for this legendary Nakaya Dorsal Fin 1 Midori Ishime Fountain Pen, which comes with its wooden presentation box (including outer) and pen kimono. The pen has barely been used and is presented in overall fantastic condition.
Nakaya require no introduction and if you’ve got this far then likely you’ll be familiar with their wonderful writing instruments. The Dorsal Fin 1 is a legendary model, with its distinctive finned cap.
The pen is hand-turned from solid ebonite stock, which then has multiple layers of lacquer applied, before finally being finished with natural urushi resin. Midori Isahime is an extremely rare and stunning finish...the base colour is a blue-green lacquer (almost turquoise), with dry lacquer powder then sprinkled on the surface, where it then clumps together. It's then polished to creat the 'Ishime' finish.
The 14k nib was reground by the legend that is Yukio Nagahara, renowned for his work with Sailor. Since 2020, he works freelance under the name "The Nib Shaper". The nib is similar in style to the iconic Naginata-Togi Sailor nib, with it creating a thinner line with a higher writing angle and a thicker line on a lower angle. It also has an artichitect feel to it as it has a thicker line side-to-side, than up and down the paper.
The pen is fitted with a 14k rhodium-coated nib and it’s a cartridge / converter pen (supplied), so your choice here is bottled ink.
