Thanks very much for looking at our listing for this Montblanc Meisterstück 149 Silver Rings Celluloid 1950’s Fountain Pen, which comes with a modern Montblanc presentation box. The pen is in lovely condition for its age – there is a chance that the snowcap is a slightly later service replacement, as usually the snowcap on the 50s pen take on an ivory-coloured hue, but this remains crisp white.

 

 

 

The 149’s of the 1950’s are unlike any other 149 offering and we absolutely love them. The most obvious difference between the 50’s pens and those that followed is that the two outer cap rings are crafted from sterling silver, rather than being gold-plated, hence you’ll often find these pens refered to as a Silver Rings 149. On these you can get celluloid shrinkage, which then loosens and distorts the rings, but these are overall tight and relatively straight.

 

 

 

This example features the later style feed, which has a grooved shank and face, along with the short ink window. The cone is heat-stamped with 149 and EF (denoting an extra fine nib). These 50’s 149s feature a telescopic piston, so during the first stage there is no movement of the piston, then you’ll feel a small amount of resistance and when the second stage then activates it is used as any other piston in a 149.

 

 

 

The pen is fitted with a glorious 14c tri-tone extra fine nib and these 50’s nibs are just a dream to write with.
