Thanks very much for looking at our listing for this Montblanc Patron of Art 888 Gaius Maecenas Limited Edition Fountain Pen, which comes with its large lacquered Montblanc presentation box (a couple of tiny marks to this and some very light flaking to the inner lining). The pen has never been used (the protective tape is still on the grip section) and is presented in virtually as new condition. Only 888 were produced and this is number 562.
In 2011, Montblanc honoured the famous Roman diplomat and counsellor, Gaius Cilnius Maecenas. A friend and advisor to Octavian, and patron to poets such as Virgil and Horace, Maecenas was the very definition of a ‘Patron of Art’.
This glorious 888 version features a white carrera marble barrel, with the overall design inspired by the column of a Roman temple. The first line of Horace’s ode to Maecanas appears on the skeletonised cap, which is crafted from solid 18k yellow gold, along with the other gold elements. His portrait can be found on a replica ancient Roman coin, which sits on the bottom of the piston cone. The clip is designed to appear like a Roman sword.
This is a richly detailed writing instrument and certainly one of our favourite pens from the Patron of Art series. Atop the cap sits the iconic Montblanc snowcap, crafted from mother-of-pearl.
The pen is fitted with an 18k medium nib and it’s a piston filler, so your choice here is bottled ink.

With every pen that we sell we provide a card that includes the manufacturer, model, serial / limitation number and date it was purchased from us. We do this because our customers like to have documentation showing that it’s been purchased from a trusted seller. As the Financial Times said recently in their How To Spend It publication – “izods is an e-cache of ultra fine fountain pens”.
